ARTIST
Coming from a family of Japanese artists for 3 generations, Sébastien Kito, son of the painter Akira Kitô, was born in Paris in 1963. He studied painting and entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1985 and attended Pierre Alechinsky’s workshop hoping to rediscover the spirit of the Cobra group in which his father had participated in the 1950s. At the same time, he worked for artists of New Realism, notably Raymond Hains, whose assistant he became from 1983. He then quickly felt the desire to explore the confrontation of his dual Japanese and French origins. Through original thinking and a hybrid practice closer to sculpture, he creates hollowed-out mobile screens and paintings on supports playing on the notions of shapes, voids and solids as much as on color. His works appear in numerous private collections and museums in Europe but also in public places such as the luxurious Hôtel du Ministère (Paris 8th), the Tour Ampère (La Défense), or Place de l’Anquetille (Arcachon).

Description

“Sébastien Kito is an artist of withdrawal. Of line too, because the refined sculpture tends to become a simple vertical or curved line. Rather curved, because the world he draws is cosmic. The earth is round, space is curved, the tree is ellipse.”
Claude Mollard

Mobile, articulated and hollowed-out sculptures, often bearing anthropomorphic or animal reminiscences, the works of Sébastien Kito have a particular relationship to space that is close to the Japanese concept of «ma», referring to the subjective variations of the vacuum connecting two separate elements. The artist materializes, from traces and simple lines, cut-out forms that articulate themselves in games of colors and transparencies to produce new refined volumes. He thus suggests complex relationships or interactions between sculptures and space, between full and empty.

The artwork Merle created for the Art For All Prestige collection perfectly reflects this reflection. A true symbol of knowledge and intuition, but also a bearer of renewal, this noble bird invites itself today in a new dialogue between the artist and the collector.
