ARTIST
Born in 1959 in Rimouski, Quebec, Jean Brillant grew up surrounded by untamed nature. His family later moved to the south of France, where, between the ages of 11 and 17, he apprenticed under master stonemason J-P. De Kock. After studying at the Beaux-Arts in Aix (1979), attending a graphic design school in Paris, and training in foundry work at ENSA in Dijon, he earned a Visual Arts degree from the Université de Montréal in 1984. Returning to his homeland, he drew inspiration from the interplay between natural elements and industrial remnants to develop his work around sculpture-objects. His creations, built on spatial principles such as verticality, balance, asymmetry, and envelopment, fuse shaped and found materials, particularly stone. With his monumental sculptures, which he began developing in the 1990s, he became part of major public collections (Musée du Québec, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Musée d’art de Rimouski, MACAAL in Marrakech) as well as private collections (Fondation Bombardier, Lavalin, Steelcase…).

Description

“I use natural and industrial materials such as stone and steel to build my sculptures. Emerging from one another, they ensure durability.”

Drawing from Nature, as it imposes itself and evolves in the face of humanity, the essence of his sculptures, Jean Brillant conceived the artwork Nomade as the story of a ‘journey’: The one traveled, carrying the memories of forged experiences, and the one yet to be traced.

This steel wheel, ready to wander, jealously encloses stones from the Atlas Mountains overlooking the sculpture park for which it was designed. It creates a dialogue between the materials while challenging their physical properties, transforming its aesthetics. In its “Art for All” version, these same paradoxes emerge. The structure, although made of metal, suggests lightness, making one doubt its actual mass, while its form, evoking the large paddle wheels beating the rivers, draws a surprising, motionless ballet where the stones seem to slide and clash. Faced with the illusion of life, Nature reclaims its place here; in wonder and emotion.
