The Los Angeles-based luxury eyewear brand Jacques Marie Mage has established its first presence on the East Coast with the opening of its New York gallery in the heart of SoHo. Located at 140 Wooster Street, this new 2,100-square-foot space, spread over several levels, houses the brand’s collections, leather goods, jewelry, and a carefully curated selection of objects.

Designed in collaboration with French architect and designer Jacques Garcia, the gallery offers a spectacular interpretation of the Jacques Marie Mage universe, a blend of urban modernism, Art Deco refinement, and a fascination with the vast American landscape.

At the heart of this scenography, the monumental works of Quentin Garel occupy a central place. Three immense sculptures of animal skulls punctuate the space, their powerful forms engaging in a dialogue with precious woods, mirrored surfaces, and the architectural elements conceived by Jacques Garcia.

Garel’s work, at the crossroads of natural history and mythology, finds a particularly evocative setting here. His animal sculptures, both precise and imaginative, bring an organic and almost timeless dimension to the gallery. They also echo Jacques Marie Mage’s West Coast roots and the American imagination that nourishes the Maison’s identity. Garel readily describes his approach as that of a “cabinet of curiosities”: a world where scientific observation meets fiction, where each animal becomes simultaneously a subject of study, a memory, and an imaginary creature. “With a chainsaw as my pencil, I construct this gallery of portraits,” he explains, describing his method of sculpting directly from the material and gradually allowing his figures to emerge.

The experience continues upstairs, where visitors literally pass through the jaws of the wolf sculpted by Garel. This spectacular yet playful intervention transforms the passage between spaces into a genuine artistic experience.

Upstairs, the Special Collections, Special Editions, and Made-to-Measure services unfold in a more intimate atmosphere, amidst furniture, precious materials, and architectural details. Together, they create a universe where art, design, and craftsmanship converge, making this first New York gallery far more than just a new showcase for Jacques Marie Mage’s collections: a true cultural destination in the heart of SoHo.

Quentin Garel was born in Paris in 1975. Son of the sculptor Philippe Garel, he graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1998. He was a resident at the Casa de Velázquez (Madrid, Spain) from 1998 to 2000. His sculptural work is characterized by the creation of a bestiary, sometimes very realistic, centered on the animal figure and its skeletons. His work explores, based on the themes of animal trophies and paleontological remains, the complex relationships that man maintains with animals in their representation. An excellent draftsman, Garel works the subjects of his sculptures in advance on paper before shaping wood, bronze, or iron with great delicacy in the textures and a play on the excess of his works presented during exhibitions of scales such as “Le Magicien d’Os” (Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle de Paris – 2016; Venice – 2017), or his retrospectives at the Center d’Art Contemporain de la Matmut in Rouen (2019) and at the Domaine de Chamarande ( 2020).
